Running Late

Radio host

Todd Richards

On air somewhere since the late 1980s, Todds been in-and-around musicians and scenes wherever he goes. He loves a great record dive, and can’t wait to wow people with his next find. Musicians are artists in his eyes (and ears) and deserve proper respect and recognition for the work of craft. Much the same can be said on his take on radio (especially non-com, commercial stations) in the way that stations reflect the places that they serve. Hosting Running Late since its start in 1997, Todd looks forward to celebrating Vinylthon every year.

About Todd Richards

For this year’s WVYL broadcast, I will be digging into a selection of deep cut 12 inch singles from vinyl, along with a few Running Late live sets and perhaps an artist drop in or two. The show will blend extended tracks, live performances, and unexpected moments that capture the excitement of radio when anything can happen.

Radio has always held a special power because of its ability to transport the listener. With nothing more than sound and imagination, it creates a kind of theater of the mind. Even when someone is listening alone on a long and quiet highway, radio can still provide a sense of connection and shared experience.

My musical tastes span many styles and eras. One band that has been a recent favorite is Tedeschi Trucks Band. I also return often to artists such as Simple Minds, U2, Lyle Lovett, Led Zeppelin, B. B. King, and Toto. It is a list that continues to grow as new music and rediscoveries find their way into the rotation.

Some of the most memorable concerts I have attended include Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Joshua Tree Tour by U2, the Crossroads Guitar Festival, U2 360° Tour in 2011, and the Alive and Kicking Tour by Simple Minds. Each of these shows captured a different moment in live music, from historic collaborations to massive stadium performances.
