I’m a teacher, musician, and festival organizer who just recently became a filmmaker as well with the release of my duo project audio-film with my friend, Brett Doeffinger, called Happy 90th Birthday.

Radio host

Brett Def

Legal assistant by trade, musician and filmmaker by heart, who recently debuted a feature film as part of our duo, Here KeKe, and audio-visual, album-film project, called Happy 90th Birthday, with my friend, Parry Casto.

About Parry

For this year’s WVYL broadcast, Brett and I will be revisiting the musical roots of our project. The show begins with selections connected to Ween and their album White Pepper, which we once performed live in its entirety. That performance helped spark the direction of our collaboration. Over the following three years we wrote and recorded two albums of our own, including Happy 90th Birthday. The project also expanded into a 41 minute audio film built around the record, which was recently screened at the Appalachian Film Festival. The WVYL show will connect those creative milestones and share the music that shaped them.

Radio has always been central to my life and identity. I first got behind the microphone as a student DJ at Marshall University between 2000 and 2001. Since then I have continued working with college and independent stations through my music festival, Funktafest. Radio remains one of the most powerful ways to share music, build community, and support artists who are creating something new.

My musical influences span a wide range of artists and styles. Some of the musicians who have had the biggest impact on me include The Beatles, Ween, Beck, Queens of the Stone Age, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Steely Dan, Little Feat, Devo, and David Bowie.

One of the most memorable concerts I have attended featured Rage Against the Machine and Wu-Tang Clan sharing the same bill. It was an unforgettable night of energy and intensity, the kind of performance that reminds you how powerful live music can be.

About Brett

For this year’s WVYL broadcast, Parry and I will be revisiting the origins of our project through music connected to Ween and their album White Pepper, which we once performed in its entirety. That experience became the foundation for our collaboration. Over the next three years, we wrote and recorded two albums of our own, including Happy 90th Birthday. Most recently, we expanded that work into a 41 minute album film that was screened at the Appalachian Film Festival. This WVYL show brings those creative threads together, tracing how the project has grown over time.

Radio, along with other forms of music discovery, has always been a meaningful part of my life. Being able to contribute to a program that introduces listeners, especially younger audiences, to different ways of finding music and art is something I care deeply about. It is about keeping discovery alive and encouraging people to explore beyond the surface.

My musical influences span a wide range of styles and eras. Some of the artists who have had a strong impact on me include Ween, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Patti Smith, Frank Ocean, Tyler, the Creator, Kanye West, Big Thief, Mitski, Alex G, and Angel Olsen.

One of the most memorable live performances I have attended was seeing Kanye West. It was a powerful and unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression.
